Mozart wrote this in Salzburg around 1776, likely to fulfill the requirements of Archbishop Colloredo, who preferred brief liturgical services. Unlike some of his earlier sonatas where the organ simply provided a background accompaniment, these sonatas feature an obbligato organ part, giving the instrument a more prominent, soloistic voice. In this arrangement, the cello assumes this part. These Sonatas usually are comprised of a single movement.
