Originally composed for violin and piano by the legendary virtuoso Fritz Kreisler, this piece is part of his famous "Classical Manuscripts" hoax. In the early 20th century, Kreisler published several charming works attributing them to historical composers—in this case, the Italian Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Martini (Padre Martini)—before admitting in 1935 that he had written them himself.

True to its title, the Andantino is written at a moderate, walking tempo. It beautifully mimics the elegant, graceful, and clean style of the late Baroque or early Classical era, while subtly weaving in Kreisler’s signature Romantic warmth and expressive harmonic shifts.

Educational Value

This arrangement serves as an excellent pedagogical tool for intermediate viola students. It addresses several core technical and musical concepts:

  • Bow Control and Legato Phrasing: The piece features long, singing melodic lines that require smooth bow changes, consistent weight distribution, and precise bow speed management to sustain a resonant, uninterrupted tone.

  • Stylistic Versatility: Because it is a Romantic imitation of a Classical/Baroque style, students learn how to balance historical restraint with expressive warmth. It teaches them how to use a controlled, nuanced vibrato and clean articulation appropriate for the "style of Martini."

  • Intonation and Shifting: The melody moves gracefully across registers. For violists, this provides excellent practice for clean shifting into higher positions while maintaining the instrument's characteristic deep, warm tone.

  • Ensemble Playing and Collaboration: As a duo for viola and piano, the piece demands active listening. The student must learn to balance their sound with the piano, match phrasing, and navigate the rubato (flexible tempo) inherent in Kreisler's writing.

This piece is a fantastic choice for recitals, juries, or studio pieces, offering a highly rewarding musical payoff for developing violists
