This piece is an arrangement of the famously nostalgic and lyrical slow movement (the Largo) from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, "From the New World", which he composed in 1893. Written during his time in the United States, the melody beautifully blends American roots and spiritual influences with traditional Bohemian elements. The hauntingly beautiful theme was later adapted into the popular spiritual-style song "Goin' Home" by his pupil William Arms Fisher.

Educational Value

Arranged specifically as a viola quartet, this piece offers several excellent pedagogical benefits for string students:

  • Ensemble Playing & Chamber Skills: Performing in a homogeneous four-part ensemble forces players to listen deeply to one another to balance the overall sound, match articulation, and pass melodic lines seamlessly between parts.

  • Intonation & Tone Production: The slow, sustained nature of the Largo melody requires excellent bow control, consistent vibrato, and precise intonation to keep the rich harmonies of the four violas sounding warm and resonant.

  • Expressive Phrasing: Students learn to manage long, breathing musical phrases and execute subtle dynamic changes ( and ) that are crucial for capturing the piece's deeply emotional and reflective character.

  • Cultural & Historical Context: It serves as a fantastic gateway to discuss late 19th-century music history, the concept of nationalism in classical music, and how Dvořák incorporated African American and Native American musical idioms into Western classical structures.
