Composed in 1772 while Mozart served as concertmaster to the Archbishop of Salzburg, this Sonata da chiesa (Church Sonata) was written as a bright, brief instrumental interlude for a liturgical service.
While originally scored for two violins, organ, and bass, this specialized arrangement redistributes the harmonic and foundational lines for two violins and viola. It captures all of Mozart's signature classical grace, conversational phrasing, and driving operatic energy in a single, compact movement.
This trio serves as an excellent pedagogical tool for intermediate ensemble players:
Lower Voice Independence: Without a cello or double bass, the viola takes on a dual role—frequently driving the bass line and providing harmonic depth. This teaches the violist strong rhythmic leadership and independent tracking.
