  • Classic

Originally written by the French composer and violinist Jacques Féréol Mazas, the Duet No. 1, Op. 39 was initially conceived as part of his celebrated pedagogical catalog for two violins. This elegant edition presents the work in a rich, beautifully adapted transcription for two violas (viola duo).

The duet includes all three of its original movements, showcasing Mazas’ signature French classical elegance, balanced phrasing, and lyrical charm. Unlike many teaching pieces of the 19th century where a primary instrument takes center stage over a simple accompaniment, Mazas masterfully treats both voices as equal partners. The musical material constantly intertwines, passing melodies, brilliant scalar passages, and driving accompaniments back and forth between the two violists.

Educational Value

This complete three-movement duet is a stellar pedagogical tool for intermediate violists, making it an ideal choice for the teaching studio, chamber music workshops, or student recitals:

  • Democratic Ensemble Playing: Because both parts are equally engaging and technically demanding, students are forced to step away from a "soloist vs. accompanist" mindset. They must learn how to shift seamlessly between playing the primary melody and providing a supportive, rhythmically steady accompaniment.

  • Intonation and Unison Tuning: Playing in a homogeneous duo (two identical instruments) is one of the absolute best ways to train a student’s ear. Violists must listen keenly to match their partner’s pitch, particularly during close harmonic intervals, parallel thirds, and unisons, which quickly expose micro-tonal flaws.

  • Articulative Coordination and Phrasing: To make the duet sound cohesive, the two players must coordinate their bowing styles perfectly. Students will practice matching their bow strokes—from smooth, singing legato lines to crisp, off-the-string strokes—as well as aligning their phrasing, dynamics, and breathing.

  • Sight-Reading and Independent Counting: The conversational nature of the counterpoint means that if one player loses their place, the structure falters. It serves as an excellent exercise for developing an unshakeable internal pulse and building confidence in independent counting.
